Dear Marla,

I helped him set up a photocell sensor to monitor the driveway  up by the mailbox. If anything crossed its beam, a signal was transmitted to ring a "dinger" in the house.

We also set up a second photocell and beam that crossed the driveway at a long, low angle. It rang a "donger" in the house.

We'd hear a solitary "ding" a few times a week, usually at night. It was probably a bear or deer. However, if there was a "dong" shortly after that, we knew whatever it was was moving quickly. it was probably a vehicle.  The time interval between the "ding" and the "dong" provided a rough clue as to how fast the visitor was moving.

James and I created a "safe" room in the attic where I can hide if anyone visits the house.

We moved a bunch of lost-forever-in-the-attic junk around to create a sort of 'nest' area where I could stay and no one would ever know I was up there. We did things like lay two old carpets on top of each other on the floor. This double-thickness creates a sound-deadening layer. Then we set up a table for my computer, a mattress on the floor, some food and water and a night pot. I could stay up there for a day or two if needed and no one below would know it.

In the year or so that I have been here, the time when Lorraine's cousin visited for two days was the only time they have had overnight guests.  I wasn't wearing rubber all the time then, so I didn't need to hide.

James jokingly refers to visitors as "foreigners".

The visits of most "foreigners" are usually related to Jame's tree farming business and only last a few hours. Most of the time they are out in the woods.  I can just retreat to my safe room then. There is also a neighbor and his son who will come over now and then to help with some task that James and Lorraine cannot do by themselves. Like the Hahns, they don't seem to want mix socially with them (or anybody else, for that matter) but they do trade favors like this. Apparently the guy is homophobic, so, it is critical that I escape to the Nest when he comes over. James said that if he saw me, the whole county would know about it by sundown.
